This is why it is so important for developers to consider other options to asphalt covered cast iron DWV pipe.
Hydrogen sulfide which resides in sewer systems will absolutely reek havock on regular coated cast iron.
The coating on cast iron provides little protection. the coating is only there to make the product look appealing and protect it during shipment.
In my opinion the days of non epoxy coated pipe are over unless you want an expensive retrofit later.
I have seen failures as little as five years after installing. Hydrogen Sulfide is generated by organic material such as grease and human waste.
When we limited the amount of water going into the system it caused these materials not to wash out.
The gas settled on the crown weir of the pipe and since the molecular structure of the pipe is always trying to come out of round, when it creates a pin hole it will eventually split the pipe.
